We closed our doors at Les Trois Mages on June 19th to carry out some refurbishment and upgrades to the riad. As we have come to expect, getting any building or repair work done in Morocco is a minefield. There are invariably misunderstandings, challenges and  frustrations, but these go hand in hand with lots of laughter, new friendships and another step up in the learning curve of running a business in Marrakech. As with previous building upgrades, this one did not disappoint!  It has been a hectic, educational and extremely hot 10 days.

Here’s how it went …………………………..

The terrace walls are built using a traditional technique

Saturating the porous underlayer

Applying the second layer of plaster

The weather was several degrees above average for the time of year so this was all carried out in direct sunlight at an average temperature of 42 degrees. Marrakech Weather Forecast

The second layer once dried, is then rendered before finally having 2 coats of paint applied.

Not surprisingly the team sought out the shade for their much needed and well deserved mint-tea break!

And were pleased to see that the boss was still working!!

Omar & Mustapha are pleased to see Tony is not slacking!

After completing the final coat of paint, Les Trois Mages guardian Moushine gave the terrace plants a very welcome watering.

It's not just the workers that need plenty to drink in these temperatures!

Next came the long drawn out but eagerly awaited process of refilling the pool.

The pool took 18 hrs to refill.

Before Leila & Najia put the finishing touches to the terrace.

The tent furniture, cushions & drapes were reinstated

The tables & sun-loungers reinstated

The final coat of paint was dry just in time to witness a beautiful sunset over the medina.
