CASABLANCA – The greatest love story ever told.

With the Marrakesh Film Festival coming to a successful close recently and continuing the film theme – there was a big celebration up in Casablanca last month at the infamous ‘Rick’s Cafe’ ( It was to mark the 70th anniversary of the premiere of “Casablanca,”, the movie many consider to be the greatest love story ever told. It premiered in New York 70 years ago on 25th November 1942. The movie won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Michael Curtiz) and Best Screenplay.

So, “Casablanca,” here’s looking at you:


The movie takes place during World War II in the town of Casablanca in the North African country of Morocco. Humphrey Bogart plays Rick Blaine, a mysterious American expatriate who owns a nightclub called “Rick’s Cafe Americain.” Rick’s old girlfriend, Ilsa Lund, played by Ingrid Bergman, shows up in town married to Victor Laszlo, an Allied war hero for whom the Nazis are searching. They need help escaping, and Rick can help them. But he’s still in love with Ilsa and angry that she ditched him some time ago on liberation day back in Paris.

Famous lines Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart): “Here’s looking at you, kid.”

Capt. Louis Renault (Claude Rains): “Major Strasser has been shot. Round up the usual suspects.”

Ilsa Laszlo (Ingrid Bergman): “Play it, Sam. Play ‘As Time Goes By.’ ”

Rick: “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world she walks into mine.”

Rick: “I remember every detail. The Germans wore gray, you wore blue.”

Rick: “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

Ilsa: “Kiss me. Kiss me as though it were the last time.”

Rick: “If that plane leaves the ground and you’re not on it, you’ll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But soon and for the rest of your life.”

Rick: “Ilsa, I’m no good at being noble. But it doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.”

Renault: “Because my dear Ricky, I suspect that underneath that cynical shell you are at heart a sentimentalist.”

Signor Ferrari (Sydney Greenstreet): “It would be a miracle for you to get out of Casablanca, and the Germans have outlawed miracles.”

Renault: “How extravagant you are throwing away women like that. Someday they may be scarce.”

Renault: “There’s no hurry. Tonight he’ll be at Rick’s. Everybody comes to Rick’s.”

Ugarte to Rick (Peter Lorre): “You despise me don’t you?”

Rick: “Well, if I gave you any thought I probably would.”
